MAKER'S MARK OF PAUL STORR, LONDON, 1806

The arms are those of Wyndham quartering Hopton for Sir George O'Brien (Wyndham), the 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837). The 3rd Earl succeeded his father at the age of twelve, in 1763, and in 1767 matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford. He was a great artistic patron, and Turner, Constable, Flaxman, Benjamin Robert Heydon and Charles Robert Leslie were among those to benefit from his encouragement. In 1806, the Earl married Elizabethe Aycliffe, who had been his mistress for several years and had borne him six illegitimate children.

The Egremont Service, sold by Order of the Executor of the Late Lord Egremont, comprising a 185 piece dinner service, was sold at Christie's, London, March 21, 1979, lot 35. A portion of the service was sold again at Christie's, New York, January 10, 1991, lot 54, sold on behalf of the Republic of the Philippines through the Presidential Commission on Good Government.
