Maker's mark of Dougal Ged overstriking that of William Dempster, Edinburgh, 1760; the branches 19th century
Each on shaped octafoil stepped base with band of gadrooning, rising to a columnar stem surmounted by a Corinthian capital, the base engraved with a coat-of-arms, crest and motto, and with inscription Feb.ry 27th. 1761 on third side, each silver-plated branch with four leaf-clad scroll arms (two removable) with campana-form sockets and square nozzles and wax-pans, the central standard surmounted by a similar socket with a removable flame-form finial, the candlesticks marked under bases, the branches apparently unmarked

The arms are those of the City of Edinburgh, and the crest is that of Maxwell of Springkell, Dumfries. The present candlesticks appear to have been presented to a member of that family by the City of Edinburgh on February 27, 1761.
