A FINE PAIR OF GEORGE II SILVER CANDLESTICKS
Maker's mark of John Hugh Le Sage (Grimwade 1646), London, 1737
In the French taste, each on a spreading circular base cast and chased with band of shells and strapwork on a matted ground, rising to a guilloche knop and a tapering fluted stem with band of lion's heads, surmounted by a sunflower calyx and spool-form socket, one side of base engraved with a crest, marked under bases
10¼in. (26cm.) high; 62oz. 10dwt. (1951gr.) (2)

Lot Essay

The crest is that of Sutton.

This pair of candlesticks match a pair produced by Leopold Antoine, Paris, 1728, sold from the Collection of D. David-Weill, Part II, Palais Galliera, Paris on November 24, 1971, lot 2. Le Sage must certainly have tried to replicate the French model as closely as possible, as even the manner in which the marks are struck and distorted under the base is typical of French rather than English silver.
