During de Blaas' lifetime, amongst the British collectors of his paintings, one of the most sought after subjects was that of Italian women in the company of admiring suitors. On the Balcony is not only a great example of masterful composition, but it also is a fantastic display of his academic training as an artist. It comes as no surprise that de Blaas, following his father, should be elected as a Professor at the Academy in Vienna.
