Courbet spent three months in Trouville between September and November 1865. Judging from his correspondence to friends and family, this was a very happy and productive time. Courbet was in awe of the sea and the life revolving around it and made these predominant themes in his works from this period.
Recent letters from Jean-Jacques Fernier indicate that his father never examined this painting in person, and therefore, was not aware of the signature and date when he included it in his catalogue raisonné. Additionally, although the painting is signed in 1866, J.J. Fernier firmly believes it was actually painted in 1865 during Courbet's stay in Trouville.
