Lot Essay

Julien Dupre's entry to the 1882 Paris Salon, no. 939, Au Pâturage (Washington University Art Museum, St. Louis), was considered one of his most successful paintings. It received tremendous critical acclaim when it was exhibited in 1882, and was so popular that Dupre painted a replica (University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington ). In addition to the replica, the image was engraved by Edmond Yon, and a sketch is known to exist as it was reproduced in the Figures Contemporaines of the Album Mariani. It has been suggested that the present drawing was executed after Dupre's painting and served as the preparation for the engraving by Yon.
