Apparently for wet-collodion use. The darkslide shows signs of contemporary silver staining. A similar design of camera with identical label was sold in Cameras and Optical Toys, 20 August 1998, lot 303.

John Spencer began describing his business as a 'Wholesale photographic and stereoscopic depot' from 1856/7. The business continued in this form until c.1870.
