Lot Essay

The clock celebrates the triumph of lyric poetry, with Cupid indicating the hours in Apollo's laurel-wreath set amongst flowered acanthus on the stepped 'altar' clock. The torch-bearing Sun diety displays his lyre as leader of artistic inspiration, and is attended by a ewer-bearing youth, symbolic of dawn; while his shrouded companion Urania, symbolises Night and is attended by an owl and youth with inverted torch.
