Late 17th Century, possibly by Frans Tons
Woven in wools and silks, each with a shield in front of a cross and below a coronet, flanked by winged putti holding garlands of fruit, in a wooded landscape, with an egg-and-dart border and later blue slip, the sides with original blue border under later slip and lacking original slip on the top and bottom, woven by different hands, slight variations to design
One: 7 ft. 9 in. x 5 ft. 6½ in. (236 cm. x 169 cm.)
the other: 7 ft. 11in. x 5 ft. 5½ in. (241 cm. x 166.5 cm.) (2)

Lot Essay

A related armorial tapestry with the central arms of the Carnero of Astorga, Leon, suspended before a similar landscape background was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 30 May 1987, lot 257.
