Lot Essay

The Royal George capsized in Spithead harbour in 1782 whilst being heeled over for careening. Over 900 lives were lost including many visiting civilians and she proved a major obsruction to shipping over the next seventy years. With attempts to raise her thwarted, she was removed slowly piece by piece over several years providing timber for local building and an assortment of souvenirs such as this book.
