Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this is a contemporary account of the Battle of Trafalgar. However, it is more likely to be a preparatory sketch that would have been worked up at a later stage into an oil painting.

Rear-Admiral Edward Pelham Brenton von Donop joined the Royal Navy in 1827, was made Captain in 1855, and appointed Rear-Admiral (Ret'd.) in 1873.
