Lot Essay

The full-rigger Holmsdale, 1,257 tons, was built at Sunderland to the order of Phillipps & Co. of London in 1858. Trading out of the Thames to India to start with, she became a member of the so-called Wool Fleet when she changed her regular run to Australia in the mid-1860's and turned in consistently good passage times right through until the mid-1880's.
