Gloucester schooners under full sail on the Grand Banks, off Newfoundland

The hugh sail plans of these 70-ton schooners made them exceptionally fast and many of them were designed by the same designers as the early America's Cup yachts. Speed was essential to get through the fog and drifting ice on the Grands Banks.
