Lot Essay

Hennings once stated "New Mexico has almost made a landscape painter out of me, although I believe my strongest work is in figures." (Reginald Fisher, "E. Martin Hennings, Artist from Taos," El Palacio, August 1946) The model for The Red Gown is thought to be the artist's wife.
