A French patinated-bronze group entitled 'Kabyle au retour de la chasse'
Cast from the model by Arthur Waagen, Circa 1880
The riding hunter holding a panther's skin in his left hand, a lamb in his right hand, his three hounds and his prey to his right, on an oval naturalistic base inscribed Waagen fecit to the front left, on a stepped spreading base centred to the front by a plaque inscribed KABIL AU RETOUR DE LA CHASSE PAR WAAGEN SCULPT.

Lot Essay

Arthur Waagen exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1869 to 1887.

This model is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Les bronzes du XIXe siècle, Les éditions de l'amateur, Paris, 1987, p.647. It is also known as Chasseur arabe or Cavalier aux chiens and was conceived circa 1870.
