Born at Woodstock, Vermont, in 1805, Hiram Powers (d.1873) moved first to Washington in 1834. He then went to Florence in 1837, from where he continued to send his works to America. He made his reputation on romantic and genre figures of the Florentine school, such as this bust of Prosperina, but also a bust of Ginevra and figures such as Eve, California and America (for the Crystal Palace, London), Greek Slave and The Last of the Tribe.
