Lot Essay

The present lot is the only known work of an African sitter by a Vietnamese artist.

Having graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts School in 1935, Nguyen Anh accepted a teaching position for an art school in Gia Dinh. In 1948, the artist left for Paris and painted in the Duras studio for two years. It was there, where he encountered the sitter of the present lot whose beauty never ceased to inspire him.
