Lot Essay

The present work is commissioned by the sitter's parents as an intended birthday gift to the sitter. The artist has been a close friend to the family and the young girl continuously visited her at the studio three times a week for a month in order to pose for the picture. When the completed work was first presented to the sitter, she had thought that it was not finished and commented that "Why is the neck so long?" The artist, in her gentle manner has simply said "That's the way I do it."
Apart from the fact that the artist did state that the present work is one of her best executed portrait work, the present work documents the essential elements of Anita's signature style. The slightly elongated neck is a partial effort of stylisation that enable the work to transcends the identity of an individual.

The ribbons and flowers were added playfully to commemorate the birthday occassion.
