TURRECREMATA, Johannes de (1388-1468). Expositio super toto psalterio. Mainz: Peter Schoeffer, 11 Sept. 1474.
Chancery 2o and royal 4o in half-sheets (304 x 204 mm). Collation: [1-810 910(1+1) 10-1610 1712] (1/1r prologue, 1/2v blank, 1/3r text, 17/12v colophon and printer's mark). 173 leaves. 35 lines. Types: 1:234G (first words of each Psalm), 5:118G (text), versal initials copied from those in the first edition (Rome: Ulrich Han, 4 Oct. 1470). Colophon and printer's mark printed in red. One five-line and one seven-line initial space, large initial space at the beginning of each Psalm, initial spaces instead of printed versal initials in quire 1 and the outer forme of quire 2. Rubricated with two large red Lombard initials with reserved ornament, one with brown pen-flourishing; Psalms introduced by red Lombards, small red Lombards as versal initials where spaces were left in quires 1 and 2; red capital strokes, paragraph marks and underlines. Traces of red ruling in a different ink. In this copy, half-sheets in quarto format occur at 15/4.7, 15/5.6, 17/2.11, 17/4.9, 17/5.8, 17/6.7. Single pinhole visible in the outer margin of each leaf about midway up the page. (Washed, some foxing to margins, a number of short marginal tears, some mended and touching text on two or three leaves, especially 17/9r, one tiny wormhole to blank margins of last ca. 25 leaves, the rubrication somewhat faded and sometimes overlaid by offset from the facing page with corresponding small losses to ink and paper opposite, the line-ends on 15/2v faintly printed and retraced in contemporary manuscript, reinforcements to a number of inner margins, resewn apparently in eights, 11/8 and 11/9 bound in reverse order.) Seventeenth-century French red morocco, gilt spine, traces of gilt edges (rebacked with spine laid down, endpapers renewed).

Fourth edition, following Ulrich Han's 1470 Rome edition and the two Augsburg editions of Johann Schssler. The round Gothic text type of this edition was that used by Fust and Schöffer in their 1462 Bible, and the display type is the smaller of their Psalter types, used as the text type of the 1457 Psalter. The printed versal initials found in the present edition were modelled on those used in Han's edition of Turrecremata, from which Schöffer's text was set. Schöffer printed two more editions of this text, in 1476 (Goff T-522) and 1478 (Goff T-524).
Lehmann-Haupt cites this edition as illustrating changes in Schoeffer's printing practices: "One can trace experiments with the elimination of hand rubrication, the more prominent use of running heads and similar features, also the gradual introduction of black display type instead of hand lettering in red. A good example is his 1474 edition of the Expositio Psalterii by Turrecremata. The large-size quotations from the Psalter text preceeding the explanatory comments illustrate this new black-and-white emphasis which takes the place of the old black-and-red usage" (p. 54). The pattern by which the printed versal initials were introduced into the inner forme of quire 2 and later quires, as well as the skewed type-pages on 5/4r.7v of this copy, show that this edition was printed two pages at a time.
