Text with commentary surround, 74 lines of commentary and headline. Types: 22:89R (text), 23:64BR (commentary), 19:280G (title), 17:145G (headlines, headings), 4:48G (interlinear gloss). 157 woodcut illustrations, most printed from composite blocks, many repeated. Woodcut device (Davies 168). Spaces for initials with guide letters. Lombard initials to text and paragraph marks to headings supplied in red, commentary unrubricated. (Lacking the index as above, supplied in photographic facsimile [misbound], title-leaf stained and frayed, possibly supplied from another copy, blank leaf LL8 repaired, marginal repairs to corners of first quire and to M5, small wormhole from quire HH to the end.)
Binding: contemporary Nuremberg binding of blind-stamped calf, from Kyriss shop 113: Artischocke I, covers panelled with quadruple blind fillets, upper cover with outer border of alternating large rosettes and scrolling vine tools, "Horati Flacii" stamped in gothic letters at top, central panel with curving vine-stems forming compartments, small rosettes at intersections, each field with a large artichoke tool, border of lower cover with scrolling vine tools, the central panel divided into four compartments decorated with repeated artichoke tools, the four spine compartments filled with repeated large rosettes, row of three fleur-de-lys tools at top and bottom, chased brass cornerpieces with bosses, two chased brass fore-edge clasps (lacking one clasp, some unobtrusive restorations to covers, joints and head and tail of spine restored, lower endleaves renewed); preserving many deckle edges; new cloth folding case.
Provenance: extensive early notes on title and blank LL8 (badly faded), interlinear and marginal notes, particularly in Book I of the Satires.
First illustrated edition and first edition printed in Germany, containing Locher's abridged version of Perottus' commentary. Beginning with an edition of Terence in 1496, Johann Grninger published three illustrated editions of classical literature (the third was his 1502 Virgil) whose woodcuts introduced a new style in German book illustration, characterized by the extensive use of hatching or parallel lines to create shading and dimension. Many of the blocks used in the Horace, most assembled from narrow strips that could be variously combined, were first used in the Terence; others made their first appearance in the 1497 Locher or other Grninger editions.
