Collation: [1-410; 5-2410 2512 (1/1r blank, 1/1v table, 1/2r prologue, 1/3r text, 4/10v blank, 25/12v colophon); 2610 276 (26/1r alphabetical subject index, 27/5v-27/6 blank)]. 266 leaves (of 268, lacking leaf 13/2 and final blank). Double column, 46 lines. Type: 2:90G. 6-, 3- and 2-line initial spaces. Larger initials supplied in gold (probably touched up at a later date), smaller initials, paragraph marks, and line fillers in red and blue, the first few initials with penwork decoration. Contemporary manuscript catchwords at ends of quires. (Worming in gutters affecting text in first 85 leaves, fore-margins of 3/9-10 and 4/1-2 and blank corner of fol. 25/6 renewed, fol. 1/10 reinforced at gutter, small internal tears to last few leaves, last leaf defective and laid down with loss to a few letters, some smudging of rubrication). 19th-century half calf, edges speckled red (upper joint split).

Provenance: occasional contemporary marginal notes -- L. J. ?Themie, M.A., Nantes (1839 inscription) -- Walter Goldwater (bookplate, sale New York, Swann Galleries, Part 2, 5 December 1985, lot 11).

RARE edition from the first French press. The collation of this copy agrees with that published by Sheppard for the Bodleian copy and by BSB-Ink for the copy at Munich (these differ in quires 3-4 from the BnF copy, as described in CIBN). ISTC records 11 other copies, one in an American library. Possibly relevant to the early history of the book trade is the fact that half of the known copies are in England, with four in various Oxford college libraries, while only one imperfect copy is recorded in France.
