RODERICUS ZAMORENSIS (1404-1470). Speculum vitae humanae. [Paris: Au Soufflet Vert (Louis Symonel and others), ca. 1476-77].
Chancery 2o, half-sheet median 4o, and quarter-sheet imperial 8o printed by folio imposition (232 x 152 mm). Collation: [1-610 7-812 (1/1r Book I, 8/12v blank); 9-1610 (9/1r Book II, 16/2r colophon, 16/2v table of contents, 16/7r alphabetical subject index, 16/9v-16/10 blank)]. 163 leaves (of 164, without the final blank). 30 lines. Type: 1B:107GR. 1- to 5-line spaces for initials. Two 5-line ornamented initials in silver, red and yellow, smaller fine red Lombard initials, paragraph marks in red, capital strokes in yellow. First two initials with penwork decoration. Ruled in brown ink throughout. A few contemporary quire signatures and catchwords preserved. (Small hole to fol. 2/6 catching 4 letters, 9 leaves with small marginal repairs, a few insignificant marginal perforations, slight foxing and soiling to first leaf.) 19th-century French brown calf, sides panelled in blind with gold-tooled fleurons at angles, spine with gold-tooled coat-of-arms and fleurons, morocco lettering-piece, gilt edges, by Ottmann-Duplanil (joints starting, extremities rubbed); deckle edges of octavo sheets preserved.
Provenance: "D. M. Nicolao ?Sa-enracensi Misonne" (16th-century inscription on fol. 10/3r) -- effaced inscription of a college on first page.
Fourth Parisian edition, reprinted from that of Caesaris and Stol ([1473]). The Spanish prelate Sanchez de Arevalo (Rodriguez ) served successively as archdeacon at Leon and Seville, ambassador to Rome for Henri IV, governor of the Castel Sant'Angelo, and finally bishop of Zamora, Calahorra and Palencia. His popular moral treatise on the benefits and obligations of the various secular and religious stations of man was printed at least 21 times in the 15th century and translated into French, German and Spanish.
In this copy at least four different French paper stocks were used (watermarks: anchor, crowned letters ?ip?, letter p, and jug). Sheets 4/5.6, 8/1.12, 8/2.11, 8/3.10 and 8/5.8 are chancery folio full sheets; sheets 7/4.9, 7/5.8, 7/6.7, and 8/4.9 are imperial octavo half sheets; the remainder are median quarto half sheets.
