AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius (pseudo-). Soliloquia (Text beginning Agnoscam te). Winterberg: Johann Alakraw, 1484.
Chancery 4o (191 x 142 mm). Collation: [1-38 46 (1/1r text, 4/5r colophon, 4/5v-4/6 blank)]. 29 leaves (of 30, without final blank). Signed with letters of the alphabet on first leaves of each sheet (a-p). 32 lines. Type: Benedictus Mayr 1:94G. 2- and 4-line spaces for initials. Unrubricated. (Some marginal worming, a few small marginal tears, small repairs in gutter of last 3 leaves, quires loose in sewing.) 18th-century half pigskin and paper boards, edges blue-speckled.
Provenance: formerly in a Sammelband, manuscript foliation (with omissions) 241-283 -- Eric Sexton (bookplate, sale Christie's New York, 8 April 1981, lot 206).
Third Latin edition, the first dated, the probable first of three books printed at Winterberg, Bohemia, in the fifteenth century. Johann Alakraw printed a single pamphlet at Passau, in partnership with Benedictus Mayr, in the fall of 1482 (Goff I-76), before reappearing at Winterberg two years later. His surviving Winterberg output, printed entirely in type brought from Passau, consists of the present edition, an edition of Albertus Magnus, Summa de eucharistiae sacramento, dated 16 October 1484, and a broadside almanac for 1485 in Czech, of which a single copy survives. Alakraw's unusual method of signing the gatherings also originated with Mayr.
H 2013*; BMC II, 814 (IA. 51607); BSB-Ink. A-927; GW 3013; Pr 9492; Goff A-1326.
