Lot Essay

Winold Reiss, one of the first proponents of the Modernist movement in America, created the magazine The Modern Art Collector, the first of its type in the country, in 1915. He was an artist by profession and developed a reputation for his painterly depictions of Native Americans, particularly the Blackfoot tribe.
