Lot Essay

Lesuisse met this Mangbetu during his mission in the Uele province of the Belgian Congo in 1939-1940. The Mangbetu had inordinately long skulls, provoked by the binding of the children's head. This cranial deformation, which drew up the eyelids and eyebrows, was considered the height of beauty.
