Lot Essay

Only two other examples of such stools appear in the literature; one in the Bronson collection (Cornet, J., A Survery of Zairian Art, the Bronson Collection, New York, 1978, p.132, fig.71) and the other in the collection of the Musée National des Art Africains et Océaniens (Bocola, S., Sièges Africains, 1994, p.139, no.104).
Anne-Marie Bouttiaux-Ndiaye (Treasures from the Africa-Museum, Tervuren, 1995, p.311, no.78) writes: In the matter of Pende seats, their sculpted chairs - of European inspiration - are the most widely known and frequently represented in public and private collections. On the other hand, their stools (and cups, as well) form part of the personal property placed upon the tomb of an individual, supposedly serving to accompany him to the beyond after having followed him through life." Pende stools are consequently far more rare than their chairs.
