Pomanders or "Pomme d'Ambre" used to be filled with different spices or perfumes. They were carried suspended from the neck, girdle or chatelaine, and enabled the carrier to smell the scents when desired. The pomander on sale now was used to contain "schlag", marjoram, clove, rosemary and two other spices, probably cinamon and mace.
