Maker's Mark of Carl David Schrödel (Rosenberg, vol.2, 1806, no. 1674b), Dresden, circa. 1760
Set on a circular domed base with sunken centre, decorated with raised swirling rocaille floral ornaments and inscribed in Hebrew with the standard opening words of the blessings for the Havdalah cermony, alternated by flowerheads, the unusual stem in the form of a gilt bearded man holding a winecup and a spice box, wearing the typical German Jewish costume of the period, coat with pleated ruff, supporting with his head the square spice section fitted with a drawer, divided into four compartments, a ring-form handle, decorated with further rocaille ornament and pierced silver gilt flames above, the movable candleholder with a band of silver gilt smaller flames, set within a frame of four wire supports terminating in small flowerheads
