Lot Essay

Erskine Nicol, RSA, ARA (1825-1904) was born at Leith, Scotland and attended the Trustee's Academy in 1838. He went to Ireland in 1846 for four years and then settled in London in 1862. However, he still made an annual journey to Ireland to study his subjects at first hand. Later when he could not travel so far, he painted Scottish genre instead, at Pitlochry.
