Mr Vivian had his portrait painted by Orpen in 1912, and judging from his letter he had seen The Blue Hat, Orpen's portrait of Vera Hone, in the artist's studio. He bought the painting on 24 May 1912, which was subsequently sold in these rooms on 13 November 1986, lot 98 (private collection).
