Roger Fenton was one of the main driving forces behind the establishment of the Photographic Society (later the Royal Photographic Society), which held its inaugural meeting on 20 January 1853. Fenton's proposal was published in The Chemist, March 1852. The deletions to the text relate to the publication of "an annual album, of which each member should receive a copy....." and to the mention that "The heaviest expense attendant upon this plan would be the leasing or construction of convenient premises...."
