Album of fifty-two gelatin silver prints, each approx. 7½ x 9½ in. or the reverse and one two-print panorama, approx. 8 x 19¼ in., the majority titled, signed and some dated in the negatives, four double-mounted on rough paper then on album page, brown leather, titled in gilt on front cover, 10¼ x 13¾ in.

Lot Essay

An unusual album containing views and portraits taken in and around the town of Nome, Alaska with harbour scenes, shipping, a wrecked ship; goldmining subjects including new settlements along the coast and workings of the Wild Goose Mining Co. and the Solomon River Ditch Co., Sunday visitors to the mines, the construction crew at mealtime; still-life of Alaskan wildflowers and another of ptarmigan; elk and sledge-dogs in the snow and thirteen single or group portraits.

Dobbs moved to Alaska from Washington in 1900. In 1904 he was awarded a gold medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition for his Eskimo portraits.
