As W.J. Strachan has observed, "The two most successful animal forms expressed in bronze and carving are the Animal Form of 1969 [the present work] and Animal Carving of 1974. The Working Model for Animal Form is cast in bronze, and a carving nearly twice its length (1.2 metres) followed, in travertine marble. This is also the material of the final Large Animal Form, impressive on its outdoor site in the grounds of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The square and rectilinear elements of the final sculpture lend a feeling of thrust to the whole figure which comes to such an effective climax in the reptilian head. It is one of Moore's masterpieces" (W. Strachan, op. cit., p. 102).
