Lot Essay

An old inscription on the reverse of the frame identifies the sitter as Jean Louis Bavilley, father of Madame Oulhier.
The year IV of the French Republic corresponded to the period from September 1795 to September 1796.
This fine miniature will be be included in B. Hofstetter's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of François Dumont's works.
