Flattened globular black 'Japanese style' lacquer box, all over inlaid with a diaperwork pattern of shimmering burgau and gold in the Japanese somada technique, the cover centred with a circular reserve of scalloped outlines painted with a red and gold lacquer scene on a black lacquer ground depicting a dog in a stylized architectural landscape, the bulging sides with three reserves shaped as inverted hearts painted with gold lacquer landscapes on a black ground imitating hiramaki-e 17th century export lacquer, ox-blood red lacquer inside, plain gold mount with everted wavy gold thumbpiece
