Lot Essay

The chasing on the friezes is reminiscent of the work of Burel who signed an early English box in the Gilbert Collection (C. Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, no. 95). An early English box inset with a similar hardstone panel was sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 15 November 1995, lot 386.
