Cartouche-shaped box with baluster sides, engraved all over with c-scrolls and foliage, the cover, scrolling foliate thumbpiece and front side furthermore enamelled with blue scrolls, the cover centred with a circular portrait miniature of King Christian IX of Denmark wearing uniform and the sash of the Royal Danish Order of the Elephant and the cross of the Royal Danish Order of the Dannebrog and numerous other orders, within a glass-stone border flanked by six larger silver-mounted glass-stones

The signature on the backing paper of the miniature specifies that Rockstuhl took 19 hours to paint it. Christian IX (1818-1906), from the branch of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, was King of Denmark 1863-1906. He was married in 1842 to Louise of Hesse-Cassel and became father of a King of Greece, a Queen of England and an Empress of Russia.
