The Italian architect and designer, Ettore Sottsass, accurately described the work of Kuramata as 'haiku'- an apt description that undoubtedly relates to his luminous chair. Here Kuramata creates a formal poetry by combining and shifting both the form and function of a chair and lighting device. As in a poem where the juxtaposition of words in a new way creates a resonance of meaning, Kuramata's chair evokes an immediate reponse and the recognition of an unique and personal style. The design has broken beyond the confines of logic and become an expression of pure creativity.
