Each with cartouche-shaped outline, the central scene of figures dressed in exotic costumes with various attributes such as flutes, birds, books, axes, pipes, with a small pagoda in the background, the borders with an abundance of stylised flowers, the easel suports later, probably formerly polescreen-banners

Lot Essay

The source for the costume designs is probably the engravings by Octavia Dalvimart in Costumes of the Turkish Empire, 1804, republished in 1814 as Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Turks.
