A FINE LARGE IMPERIAL SPINACH-GREEN JADE MARRIAGE BOWL
INCISED AND GILT JIAQING YU SHANG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Ornately carved in relief around the exterior of the bowl with shou characters alternating with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, the centre of the interior naturalistically rendered in high relief with a leafy lingzhi spray, the bowl flanked with a pair of loop handles issued from elaborate butterflies and suspending loose rings, the stone of a deep spinach-green tone flecked with of lighter and darker inclusions

Lot Essay

Spinach jade was often reserved for large pieces in the imperial palace, and this lot which is unusually large for a marriage bowl. Compare this with a smaller white jade Qianlong-period marriage bowl with handles treated in a similar way with butterflies, illustrated by R. Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, no. 88.
