On a very skillfully carved example of especially fine material such as this censer; light behind the semi-translucent jade highlights the carved details allows for the scenes to be more fully appreciated with transmited light.

Compare the present large table screen with a pair illustrated by R. Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, 1996, pl. 123. In both instances, clouds and rocky edges of mountains surround and frame the rim, concentrating the viewer's gaze onto the centre of the scenes.

Specially made stands were not uncommon for table screens in the Qianlong period, as the emphasis was focussed on sumptuousness and rich embellishment. Apart from wood, stands were made in jade, bronze and as cloisonne enamel.
