The text records a date of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, Geng Chen year, corresponding to A.D. 1760. In reference to the pictorial carving, it mentions that the inspiration for the aubergine branch is from a painting by the famous Ming dynasty master, Shen Zhou (A.D. 1427-1509), as indicated by the two characters Shitian which is Shen Zhou's zi (designation). The inscription may be translated as:

The brushwork of Shitian well captures the spirit of the objects he painted,
but that of Shaxi is the most superb of all.
Without the ordinary fare served on a dish,
how can we realise that the dew-bearing vegetables freshly picked from the field are so tasteful.

Shixi is a river in Zhejiang province near the hometown of the great Yuan dynasty painter, Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322); and the text here probably refers to Zhao. The last two lines are an allegory comparing Shen Zhou to ordinary dishes and Zhao Mengfu to tasteful vegetables.
