Lot Essay

The present example appears to be unique in its inclusion of the butterfly in an otherwise standard design. Compare to similar examples without the butterfly motif, the first illustrated in Mayuyama Seventy Years, vol. I, p. 355, no. 1065; another from the Meiyintang Collection, illustrated in the Catalogue, vol. two, p. 135, col. pl. 765; and further example from the British Rail Pension Fund, sold in Hong Kong, 1 November 1999, lot 364. Also compare to a narcissus dish included in the exhibition, The Hundred Flowers Botanical Motifs in Chinese Art, Asian Art Museum, 1985, illustrated by T. Bartholomew, Catalogue, no. 46, where the author suggested the pattern forms the rebus 'Fungus Fairy bestows birthday greetings'.
