A VERY FINE CARVED GREEN TOURMALINE PENDANT
18TH/19TH CENTURY

The oval pendant attractively carved with a playful chilong, its sinuous body coiled through the central opening to the reverse, with its head and front paws re-emerging from the top, the borders with two smaller chilong, the pendant of a clear lime-green colour, strung with a pink tourmaline bead and pearl florettes

Lot Essay

In the Nan Chun Gu Yu, Jiang Zhao Bo states that from the Qianlong period onwards, tourmaline and jade were regarded as the two most treasured material. Compare with other carved tourmaline pendants in different colours in the National Palace Museum, illustrated in Qingdai Fushi Zhanlan Tulu, Qing Dynasty Costume Accessories, nos. 210-212.
