Lot Essay

Erich Weiss (1874-1926) first became interested in magic after seeing Dr Lynn, a travelling magician, as a small boy. At the age of 17 he joined forces with Jack Hayman and formed the 'Houdini Brothers', although the 'Brothers' was later dropped after Hayman left the partnership.
Famously known for his escape acts Harry Houdini first introduced his 'Chinese Water Torture Cell' during his European Tour of late 1912. It is said that audiences had to wait 2 minutes before the magician emerged from the water filled metal and plate glass tank in which he was suspended upside down.
