For a last minute order from the Theatre de la Renaissance the printer Lemercier chose Mucha to design the poster for Gismonda which opened on 4 January 1895 as many of it's artists were away for the festive season. An immediate success the poster launched Sarah Bernhardt's six year relationship with Mucha and his own reputation as a celebrated poster artist.
