The hinged bowed and stepped lid centred by a shaped white-metal mount, to the reverse with a red velvet and ivory interior and enclosing two lidded zinc-lined compartments, the body with spreading base and on boxwood bun feet

Lot Essay

There is a very similar tortoiseshell tea-caddy in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, dating from the early 19th Century and illustrated in G. Walkling, Tea Caddies, London, 1988, fig. 60 (inv. no. W.39-1919).
