Camille Antoinette Falte was born in 1852 on the island of La Reunion, situated in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar. She was twenty-four years old when she was introduced to Redon in Paris at the Rayssac Salon that he frequented. From the beginning Redon was drawn to her by the common Creole heritage he perceived she shared with his mother Odile whom he idolized. The couple was married on 1 May 1880. Camille proved to be an astute promoter of Redon's art beyond his death. In 1922, the year before she died, she published a compilation of his documents titled A Soi-Même that she had edited.
