Of elongated form, constructed of Indian tanned hide, sinew sewn, cloth, red silk and blue and red dyed porcupine quillwork, decorated with traditional scrolling elements

Collected by Father Pierre-Jean De Smet and gifted to the ancestors of the current owners.

Lot Essay

This is most probably the strap of a shoulder pouch. The quillworked designs are similar to those decorating leather coats, made by the Missouri River Metis in the 1840s.
