Lot Essay

Inscribed on the back of the cabinet card featuring the seated Shoshone male is the following: "Washakie - the well known and famous chief of the Shoshone or snake indians. Taken in the fall of 1870 at their camp in the South Pass of the Wind River mountains. (Ab sa-ra-ra) Wyoming. Washakie (Gamblers Gourd) or Pina-qua-na (Smell of Sugar) is a half breed."

Inscribed on the back of the cabinet card featuring the annual buffalo hunt is the following: "Village in the South Pass in the foothills of the Wind River Mountains. Wyoming Territory 1870, of the Shoshonie indians under Washakie in their annual buffalo hunt."
